Annotated Bibliography

Brewster, Bill, and Frank Broughton. The Record Players: DJ Revolutionaries. New York: Grove/Atlantic Inc., 2010. Print.

This book looks at some of the top disc jockeys in the business.  The summary of their prevalence is shown in an interesting way.  This also gives a current look at the art of DJing, and may be used in comparison for the film.  This is relevant to look at how some other artists began DJing in comparison to Mark Weathersby’s story.  The book gives original artists, to modern day ones and is a credible published book.

Osborne, Richard. Vinyl: A History of the Analoque Record. Burlington: Ashgate Publishing Company, 2012. Print. <http://books.google.com/books?id=1KLSpJKckI8C&printsec=frontcover&dq=historyofthevinyl&hl=en&sa=X&ei=1odCUrXfAZOa8wSVqIHgAg&ved=0CC8Q6AEwAA

This book is a great resource because it give a lot of in depth information about the history of the vinyl record. History of the use of the vinyl, as well as the actual manufacturing of the records are explained.  Vinyls are what really drew me to learn more about DJ Mahogany, so it is important to talk about the records, which are so vital to what he does as a DJ.  He is one of the few artists, who happens to live in Athens, who still uses ’45 when he DJs.  This background of the record and the basic history of it is important to look at in this documentary.  It is a credible source, with in depth knowledge of the records.

Plasketes, George. “Romancing the Record: The Vinyl De-Evolution and Subcultural Evolution.” 26.1 (1992): 109-122. Print.

The whole relevance of my project stems from my interest in vinyls, and this article really exemplifies the spirit of the vinyl.  This journal article discussed the downfall of the vinyl and the subculture it still has within the decline.  This will also be useful to educate the audience more about vinyls, and expand more on the history behind it.  This is relevant and credible due to the peer reviewed journal and DJ Mahogany’s connect to using records.

Ploharski, Todd. Personal Interview. 28 September 2013.

This is the owner of Low Yo Yo Stuff Records in downtown Athens.  Mr. Weathersby frequents this record store to add records to his collection.  Having spoken to the staff, and Mr. Weathersby, it is apparent there is a connection between the two, a symbiotic relationship that has developed into a friendship.  It is important to get different perspectives on DJ Mahogany’s work.  This would be an interesting source, since it is his favorite record shop in Athens.  The source is reliable and can be used as good footage in the actual documentary itself.

Weathersby, Mark. Personal Interview. 28 Sep 2013.

A large majority of my information about DJ Mahogany is coming from the man himself.  I think an interview will provide great insight on who he is and what his style of DJ portrays.  Meeting with him on multiple occasions help me find a foot hold in what the documentary will center around and what type of music and vinyls he is into.  He is a reliable source and has been extremely helpful in giving me everything I need.  He is the greatest relevance to this project because he is the center of what it is.
